We know that it's become all too easy to assume that the PlayStation Network is getting hacked again whenever it goes down. That said, consider this another heads-up in long line of previous friendly reminders: Since being postponed last Thursday, Sony's announced that the PSN will go down for "significant maintenance" tomorrow, March 4th starting at 2 PM EST until approx 5 AM on Monday, March 5th. Unlike February's fixin', you'll still be booted offline even if you've logged-in with your SEN ID prior to the scheduled maintenance window. This means you won't be able to hop into a game of Domination on MW3, along with being restricted from accessing your account, the PlayStation Store, Home etc., as per usual. You can stay glued to PlayStation on twitter to get the official word on when everything's back up, but may we just suggest a stroll outside? Mostly just wondering if anyone else is interested in this Roleplay Idea. I know I've got at least two other people interested in the idea, so I brought it. Doesn't make a good RP of this kind with just three people though.

RP Setup ? Escape from Darkfaire Isle.

Notes: This same exact plot was posted before and worked out great on the site where it was posted. I hope that this goes just as well.

Umbrella, the leading pharmaceutical company in the world. To the public, it was the leading medical company, with 9 out of every 10 households using their products. This was before truth of the T-virus was released and Umbrella quickly went bankrupt however. Umbrella had back up plans in case of such an event though, having bought out several smaller medical companies, all of which supposedly broke off all public ties to the company. In secret, they continued Umbrella?s work under different names.

One such site is the Darkmoone Medical Center, located on Darkmoone Isle. A large underground bunker was built beneath the island and continued work on the T-Virus as well as a few variations of the virus. This continued on for a few years until someone found out about the work being done. They were dealt with quietly, but not quietly enough and a small investigation was started. It ended poorly, but one person did not like the fact that the case could not be solved and went to work themselves.

Umbrella had attempted to deal with this second threat, but it was soon evident that Darkmoone was no longer safe when the BSAA sent an agent to the island. The choice was then made to turn Darkmoone into a testing ground to see how well their new B.O.W.s were in combat. A plan was quickly set up, cover up story already in the works, and a plan to keep people from coming and going was underway.

Setting - Darkfaire Isle

Basic layout of Darkfaire City

The city itself was built as a mostly circular grid with the residential areas residing on the outer rings of the city and the Umbrella medical facility resting to the south just outside the town. The land bridge lies to the north. The rest of the businesses rested on the inner rings of the city. A small dock rests on east and west sides, but both had been hit rather hard making them unusable having been bombed my Umbrella. The police station and the hospital both reside on the inner most ring of the city with a small park serving as the city?s center. Located in the park is the clock tower. As if planned by Umbrella, when viewed from high up, one can trace the outline of the Umbrella logo by tracing the streets.

To the south end of the island lies the forest, which dominates about 60% of the island. Wind Turbines located along the southern most end of the island also provide the entire island with power and will continue to work, although at reduced levels providing partial power to parts of the island.

A secret Umbrella Lab also exists in the area housing the more powerful B.O.W.s until there are to be released. A large number of bombs have been planted in the base to be used as a cover up which will sink the island. They are set to go off after the tests have been completed 111 hours (4 days 15 hours) after the initial release of the virus at midnight on June 16th. Being an isolated area allows Umbrella the extra time to further study their tests in slightly more detail.

On June 1st, the island city of Darkfaire was perfectly fine. Life went on as normal.

Over the course of eleven days, canisters of the T Virus were set up and prepped to be released into the city with the AI program in charge of recording the battle that was to follow. A number of more powerful B.O.W.s were also transported into the city in secret to test their performance.

A team for 4 Elite Supervisors were also debriefed on the mission and were to report directly to the AI at the start of this test. They are also in charge of seeing to the AI?s safe passage out of the city once the tests were complete.

Plans for work on the bridges was announced at this time and stated the both bridges need serious work and would be closed for two weeks to repair this problem. Already an isolated island, most people thought that it was a good thing for the bridges to be repaired and didn?t mind being stuck on the island for two weeks.

June 11th?

9:00 AM, June 12th?

The T Virus was released quickly infecting the area. It easily took over with the wild pokemon on the island and the changed pokemon quickly attacked the town. The virus was quick to spread and within hours, the area was quickly over run by those infected, both human and pokemon alike. The bridge once connecting the island to the main land was destroyed via a number of explosives by Umbrella. The purpose was to help contain the virus in the test zone. Both docks were also bombed preventing the use of boats to escape. Umbrella also sabotaged the cell tower on the island working to prevent anyone from calling for help. The AI unit deemed ?Eddie? quickly went to work

7:00 PM, June 12th?

A call for help was sent out and a small team was dispatched by Umbrella. This was mostly used as cover to transport four of their own high ranking Supervisors onto the island with a small band of mercenaries.

This same call was received by the BSAA, or Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance. They sent in their own team of 10 high ranking agents to assist in the survival of the city.

9:00 PM, June 12th?

Gun/mutations shops, the police station, and select other areas have become strong holds to repel the ever-growing undead forces. The majority of the area is in ruins. The streets are filled with a number of zombies, crashed cars, and many other such things. Multiple buildings have been hit hard, filled with the undead as well trying to reach survivors. At this time, characters may make their presence known and RP will officially start.

Various kinds of threats walk the island and the city streets with Zombies just being the common foe. Slow, stupid, and easy to pick off, they pose little threat to those who can think when in small numbers. Larger numbers however will be a problem.

Tyrants, Hunters, Lickers, these uncommon foes and many more also roam the city searching to kill whoever they find. One of the more notable threats would be the 60-foot long giant arbok that developed a unique mutation from the virus growing to a massive size with a hunger for living flesh.

Your mission on this Island will vary based on your role. Below are the following objectives for three factions.

Darkmoone Residents?
You are survivors, a collection of those who are left after the release of the virus. Having no ties to any organizations with no knowledge of such things even being possible, this can only be described as a nightmare. While various groups are out there, each individual survivor has only one true objective, Survival. How you reach this goal is entirely up to you, you may kill off anyone you see and try to escape completely alone, or you may search for and protect others, then work as a team to escape.

Survivor Primary Objectives are as follows.
? Locate a usable escape route and exit the city.

Survivor Secondary objectives are as follows.
? Kill as many undead as you can.
? Locate new weapons.
? Locate munitions.

BSAA Agents?
Agents of the BSAA, you are here by assigned to the Operation Darkfaire. Above all else, your mission is to rescue as many survivors as possible. We also have proof that there is a lab beneath the island. You are to work your way into this lab and attempt to shut down and copy the A.I. deemed Eddie. While there, you are to keep you?re eyes open for one Dr. Alex Grimm and one Dr. Telina Grey. Both are lead scientists rumored to be on the island along with a new more powerful Anti-virus as well as a list of new possible B.O.W.s to be put into development. Upon completion of this mission, all personal will receive triple pay as well as receive immediate recommendation for recognition. Additional sources place the illegal black-market operative Anubis on the island. If found, you are to attempt live capture by any means. Little is known just how bad the virus had spread throughout the city, be careful.

BSAA team Primary objectives are as follows.
? Locate and protect as many survivors as possible.
? Locate the Hidden Umbrella Lab and attempt to shut down the A.I. program deemed Eddie.

BSAA team Secondary objectives are as follows.
? Attempt to track the rumored Anti-Virus developed on the island.
? Locate one Dr. Alex Grimm, rumored to be stationed on the island and in charge of the current production of the virus.
? Locate one Dr. Telina Grey, rumored to be stationed on the island and in charge of the current research of the anti-virus.
? If possible, locate and copy the data of current B.O.W. designs scheduled for future production by Umbrella.
? Locate one Black Market operative, Code Name Anubis. Attempt a live capture if found.

Umbrella Supervisor?
To the four Supervisors being sent to Darkfaire. Your mission, as usual is to observe the battle and collect the needed battle data to further improve the production of our B.O.W.s. You are to report and protect to the labs A.I. deemed Eddie. Do to technical difficulties, we cannot confirm the escape of Dr. Grimm or Dr Grey. If found, both are to protected and then successfully transported off the island. Following protocols, should you encounter any threats to the test or BSAA agents, you are to terminate them immediately. While unconfirmed, it is suggested that our weapons designer has gotten loose. If found, you are to acquire a test sample after observing his actions and transformation. If deemed a level four or higher threat, terminate him.

Umbrella Supervisor Primary Objectives are as follows.
? Monitor the ensuing battle between the B.O.W.s and other forces.
? Ensure the safety of the A.I. program deemed Eddie.
? Record all data of random mutations suffered by those infected.
? If Dr Alex Grimm and Telina have failed to been evacuated as planned, see to that they make a successful escape.

Umbrella Supervisor Secondary Objectives are as follows.
? Should the need arise, deal with any threats to the test.
? Kill any BSAA operatives you come across.
? Locate and observe Anubis, gather test samples and terminate if deemed too great a threat.

Y program sets kids on road to fitness | Children Health Wizard

The parking lot at the Les Chater YMCA is full. Some are here for family swim, others are visiting the library, but the majority can be found sweating and straining on the second floor where the cardio and weight machines are located.

One of these, Mackenzie Clark, is here for her first workout.

Clark, 17, has cerebral palsy and is confined to a motorized wheelchair. As a client of the McMaster Children?s Developmental Rehabilitation Program (which provides rehabilitation services to kids age 10 to 18 with neurological and/or developmental disabilities), she?s participating in Y Fit 4 U ? a joint initiative between McMaster Children?s Hospital and the Les Chater YMCA.

Launched in September 2010, the partnership allows clients of CDRP to visit the YMCA for a weekly workout. The hope is that the participants will gain confidence by being active in a community setting and integrate physical activity into their daily lives.

Over the course of 13 weeks, YMCA trainers and CDRP physiotherapists work to tailor exercise programs that target each client?s individual fitness goals ? anything from weight loss to increased overall fitness to muscle strengthening. Trained volunteers (two to each client) assist with exercises and equipment setup, gradually allowing clients to assume full responsibility for the workout. Physiotherapists make ongoing adaptations to accommodate physical abilities.

For instance, Clark?s disability affects her grip on free weights, so Lindsay Bray, a physiotherapist with McMaster Children?s Hospital, substitutes weighted bands that can be strapped around her hands. When Clark uses an arm cycling machine, the seat slides back to make space for her wheelchair.

Since the program started, 44 kids have enrolled. Its popularity means there is a six-month wait list.

?The kids love it,? says Genevieve Hladysh, general manager of Community Health Program Development for the YMCA of Hamilton/Burlington/Brantford. ?They love being in the Y and being in a vibrant healthy place.?

According to Bray, this is an important attitude to foster. Kids who are active in their teens tend to become adults who are active. Inactive kids suffer the consequences as adults and for those with disabilities like Clark?s, the negative effects are magnified. Without regular exercise, cardiovascular health suffers, muscles and joints may stiffen, and conditions like obesity and osteoporosis can develop. With exercise however, the quality of day-to-day life improves.

Kyle Todd, 17, was referred to Y Fit 4 U by his CDRP physiotherapist in 2011, months after he underwent surgery for spastic diplegia ? a form of cerebral palsy that affects his leg muscles. Since finishing the program, he has started attending the Thursday night drop-in that was developed in response to graduates who wanted to continue working out independently.

?I know I?m improving,? says Todd. ?I can see it every day. My legs are more stable and my hip doesn?t sway. I can do more now than I could before and I know that if I keep coming, I?ll be able to do even more.?

Todd has also started volunteering with Y Fit 4 U, something three additional former clients have done. ?We are very grateful to them,? says Bray. ?They are able to relate and empathize much better with our clients, which is engaging and motivating.?

They were also the inspiration for the newest component of Y Fit 4 U ? an online forum, funded in part by the Hamilton District Society for Disabled Children. It?s not often that you hear about the Internet being used as a tool to increase physical activity, but Bray says it came about when they realized volunteers and clients were using Facebook to discuss and confirm workout dates.

The hope is that the site will be another venue for encouragement. On it, clients are able to log their physical activity, ask questions of physiotherapy students, chat, and hopefully motivate each other to maintain consistent workout schedules within and outside of Y Fit 4 You. To gauge success, site moderators will administer online surveys and regular questionnaires over the next six months.

?The program is all about maximizing independence and empowering the kids to take ownership of their fitness now,? says Bray. She says it?s important to note that clients won?t likely see major fitness gains until they start regularly engaging in physical activities (like sledge hockey, swimming and wheelchair basketball) outside the program, but Y Fit 4 U is a big step toward that goal.

Private Residential Construction Spending Hits a Two-Year High ...

The Census Bureau reported that private residential construction spending activity increased 1.8% during January. The preliminary estimate for December was boosted higher to show a 1.5% gain, versus the originally reported increase of 0.8%. After falling in July 2010 to its lowest reading since mid-1995, spending on private residential construction projects has increased in each of the last six months?rising to its highest dollar value since January 2010.

Spending on new single-family home construction climbed 2.5% versus December 2011. In addition, the level of spending activity has increased in each of the last eight months and on a year-over-year basis this category has registered a gain of 5.5%. Although this improvement is modest, the sustained period of growth corroborates the mounting evidence from indicators such as the Wells Fargo/NAHB HMI, new construction starts and home sales that the housing market might have found that elusive recovery. The recent quickening in the pace of new job growth and still-high levels of housing affordability should only bode well for additional growth in single-family construction activity over the near term; however, tight mortgage lending standards and competition from distressed property sales will remain a limiting factor going forward.

Multifamily construction spending ticked higher by 0.7% in January. While month-to-month fluctuations for this category have been more volatile, the level of spending has certainly trended higher during the past year with a 20% increase versus January 2011. Authorized multifamily (5+ units) building permits remained above 200,000 annualized units for the third consecutive month in January 2012, pointing to likely gains in spending over the near term.

The home improvement component of construction spending increased for the sixth consecutive month during January, gaining 1.3% on a month-to-month basis. Overall, remodeling did not endure the same degree of decline in activity when compared to new construction for single-family and multifamily projects. In fact, during 15 of the last 16 months, the level of home improvement spending has exceeded that of new single-family homes. A combination of tax credits for retrofitting homes with energy efficiency equipment and rehabilitation/repair work on distressed properties has likely?bolstered demand for home improvement spending.

How To Solve Syria

"We are not pretending that the human rights situation in Syria is perfect. ... We are aware that there is a regression in the quality of services usually provided by the government to the population by the regions facing violence."

On Sunday, Syrians "voted" in a constitutional referendum that reflected "citizens' keenness on moving forward with the reform process," in the words of the government's news agency. On the same day, 17 more people were killed in Homs by the government's military forces, while the International Red Cross tried, and failed, to negotiate safe passage for the wounded out of the city. The Syrian regime now has two faces: the pseudo-democratic one it turns to the outside world and the vicious one it turns on its own people.

Although that contrast is clear, a Western military coalition of the willing isn't going to emerge quickly on behalf of Syria, as it did for Libya. Syria's ethnic divisions resemble those in Iraq; its ruling clique is sustained by Iran; its opposition is chaotic; and some of its population is so scared of what might come next that they may be inclined to support the regime. The Syrian army has better weapons than the Libyan army (which itself collapsed only in the nick of time, just before NATO's ammunition ran out), and Western publics are war-weary. But before we throw up our hands and let the Saudis send jihadists to "help" the Syrian rebels (the way they once "helped" the Afghan mujaheddin), we have several more cards to play.

One of them involves taking Syria's human rights rhetoric seriously?and turning it against the regime. Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, the United Nations, and others have diligently collected, compiled, and published evidence of the regime's human rights abuses, including the names and positions of Syrian officers who ordered soldiers to fire on unarmed demonstrators; accounts of torture and arbitrary detention; descriptions of rape, abuse, and murder of children; and evidence of the mass slaughter of regime opponents over many years. It's time to refer this material to the United Nations, the Arab League, the International Criminal Court (not a body I like, but since it exists we should use it); to hand it publicly to Syrian officials; to read it in Arabic on the radio; to use it in statements and at news conferences. A single speech by the American president or the British prime minister that named the criminal Syrian army officers could have an enormous impact, once it has been beamed back into Syria via radio, satellite television, the Internet, and word of mouth.

So far, Western leaders have refrained from this kind of language because, as Hillary Clinton put it this week, using labels like "war criminal" to describe Syria's president, Bashar al-Assad, can "limit options to persuade leaders to step down from power." She is right?which is why rhetoric aimed at delegitimizing the regime should be accompanied by immediate and strenuous efforts to not only unify the opposition but also to get its disparate members talking about the post-Assad future. In particular, the Syrian rebels need to start talking about transitional justice: how, exactly, former regime allies will be treated; how real criminals will be distinguished from mere collaborators; how victims will be compensated; and how the minority rule of a dictatorial clan can be ended without bloodshed.

This isn't an impossible dream: South Africa managed to avoid civil war, in an analogous (though hardly identical) situation. Violence there was avoided in part because the outgoing minority participated in the transition. If some of the Alawite elite can be persuaded to do the same, Syria stands a chance of avoiding civil war. There isn't anybody to talk to in Assad's immediate circle?all of them have blood on their hands?but if the Syrian rebels can reassure others in Damascus, Alawites as well as Christians, that they won't become the targets of a campaign of revenge, then they stand a better chance of persuading more people to switch sides. The crucial moment of the revolution?when the regime's supporters begin to sympathize with their opponents?may well be fast approaching.

One way or another, this conflict will end. Assad will fall?or he will remain in power thanks to a bloodbath, followed by another era of sullen repression. Either way, one of the best things the West can do now is help Syrian rebels and the Syrian diaspora think about what might come next. It seems ridiculous to focus on the future in the middle of a crisis. But in this case, that might be the only way the crisis can be resolved.
